Volunteer with us

Your help is needed!

There are many ways to help support Lions Cancer Institute (WA) Inc. with your time or skills and we are always very grateful to receive assistance from volunteers. Not everyone is in the position to provide financial support when donating to a charity but we know your time is just as valuable.

We count on volunteers to minimise administration costs and ensure that more of the fundraising dollar goes directly towards our primary mission of providing medical care to those who need it the most. From helping out at fundraising events, to providing professional services free of charge, to hand packing the mail, our volunteers help us keep costs down and productivity up.

Drivers Required

Do you have driving medium or heavy vehicle experience and a HR drivers licence?

Help Lions Cancer Institute (WA) Inc. by offering your time to drive our Coach. You need to possess a valid HR Driving Licence, and be available for minimum 3 days per periods of time.

I WANT TO HELP

Of course to run a screening event we need to get the team there, and to attend to all the things necessary to make the day run smoothly.

Our main unit is a converted large passenger coach, about 13 metres long and 4.2 metres high, weighing about 16 tonnes. This vehicle now has an automatic transmission and is fitted out with an on-board generator, has three consulting rooms plus a small office area. This vehicle also requires a HR drivers licence and some heavy vehicle driving experience.
For more details and to request an application form please contact our Screening Operations Director via our Volunteer Interest Form.

Medical Professionals Required

Are you a RN, EN or interested in our Online course to be trained as a screener?

If you are a medic. professional and would like to provide your services pro bono to Lions Cancer Institute (WA) Inc., your assistance will always be gratefully received. We are keen to hear from all medical background and experiences.

I WANT TO HELP

The Lions Cancer Institute (WA) Inc. welcomes Expressions of Interest for potential Skin Cancer Screeners to join our team in a voluntary capacity to enable us to continue screening throughout Western Australia.
We are advised by experienced screeners that the most suitable candidates to participate in the required training course are typically Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, and Dental Nurses.
These professions are seen to have had experience with dealing with people where contact with the skin is normal and have compassion and good nurse/patient relationship skills.

Applicants will be initially required to attend at least one day working at a screening event, where we typically screen almost continuously from 9:00am to 3:30pm, with a lunch break, for the applicant to be fully aware of what is required.
The Lions Cancer Institute (WA) Inc. will arrange for selected applicants to undertake training using an On-line program. Training is delivered in one trimester (15 weeks), with 12 weeks of online teaching (video lectures, case discussion boards, webinars) and three weeks revision and examination. You will need your own computer and a satisfactory internet connection to your location.
The Institute will meet the cost of the course which upon satisfactory completion will entitle the student to be awarded a Certificate in Dermoscopy.

During and after the training course students will be required to attend some of our rostered screening events, many of which will be in a country town. This is to provide the necessary practical experience in order to attain proficiency as a Dermoscopist.
A condition of being trained is that you are required to attend at least three (3) screening events a year for three (3) years. Quite a few trips are done within one day, commonly a Saturday, and many extend into country area’s which may involve one or two nights away. Occasionally we run an extended trip to more remote locations which may involve up to nine or ten days away. All travel, accommodation and meals are provided by the Institute, as well as shirts and a jacket.
For more details and to request an application form and arrange attendance at an event please contact our Medical Director via our Volunteer Interest Form.

Admin Required

Do you thrive in customer services and a People Person by nature?

Office Volunteers help us in many ways, from processing donations to helping out at our events. We rely heavily on our wonderful volunteers especially during screening registrations and data-base management.

I WANT TO HELP

At a screening event we also require someone to man a desk outside the unit to guide those who have booked a time previously to be screened in completing some paperwork required. This person must be organised and be able to relate well to people, some of whom may be elderly. Some computer experience is required as there is some basic data entry done during the event.
In many instances the driver does either the outside work getting the people organised, or the data entry and other minor but necessary jobs at the desk in the unit, and the administrator does the other jobs.

To apply: If you wish to submit an Expression of Interest in either of these voluntary roles, please contact our Screening Operations Director via our Volunteer Interest Form.
